Why dog lovers have got this preconceived belief that small breed dogs are more challenging to educate than medium sized or large breed puppies, I will never be able to know. Housebreaking a puppy, in spite of its size should not pose a problem.
Small dog training, is no different from training a dog of any other larger sized breed. Whilst training any dog will have its peculiarities, based on its breed, almost all other features remain similar, and the strategy to training the puppy should stay the same, not withstanding its size.
With that said, I will stray from the rule here, and admit that small dog training may create issues in two facets, (1) Aggression and (2) Puppy crate training. Nevertheless, this is not because the size of the dog breed is small, but ten times out of ten, because of the owner.
If a smaller breed pup is aggressive and is hard to train, or if a tiny breed dog cannot be bathroom trained or poses obstacles in being toilet trained, it is the owner who has not knowingly contributed to this state of affairs. Let us analyze how and why.
Aggression.
Tiny dogs are enjoyed because they are adorable, they are like toy characters. Owners get pleasure from having their doggy sit on their laps. This particular indulgence is where the trouble commences. The basic aggressive characteristic of the puppy, is to declare ownership over its space, its food, even its owner; all pups desire to be the alpha dog.
It is the aggressive streak in the puppy that provokes it to jump on to the lap of its mistress, especially when there are plenty of persons sitting in the room.
This is a clear act of aggression. Instead of chiding the pup, every owner bar none, would hug the pooch, even though it jumped on to their lap without being asked to, promoting the aggressive streak in the dog. As a result the owner has okayed the pup's behavioral instinct to be the alpha dog.
Growling and getting upset at a a larger size dog is another obvious act of unwanted anger. To the owner, and even the people who witness it, this is regarded as cute, because one dog is tiny while the other is large. Most owners pet and pat the pup instead of chastising it, when it exhibits this aggression towards a larger dog.
What is stated above are but good examples as to why small puppies are aggressive, and not because small dog training is different or difficult.
Potty Training.
Owners choose to lug their small puppies around where ever they go, even when they are at home and that makes it plain difficult to potty train them
It is, as if by instinct that the owners of small dogs to lug the animal to the designated place where the pup should go to the bathroom and then tote it back into the house.
It is this pattern of carrying the dog to the outdoors to poop that is the root of all dilemmas. In addition, ever since the pup is as a rule carried around so often it has no way of it suggesting to or warning the owner that it has to go to the bathroom.
Small dog training begins with treating the dog as any other normal dog. They have to be shown their pooping area on a leash. If owners discontinue carrying their small breed dogs they would have no obstacles in training them.
Dog crate training, is the most exciting part of puppy training, and so it must be, even in Small Dog Training.
