An Erratic High School Student Displays Numerous Alcohol-Related Problems, Gets Thrown Out Of School, And Has To See The School Counselor

Stephen was a sixteen year old high school sophomore who was exhibiting more than a few alcohol-related problems at school. For that reason, the principal explained to him that he had to see Miss Pender, the school therapist, before he would be permitted to come back to school.

Later that day when Stephen went home after school, he had to explain his school discharge to his Mom and Dad. His parents were "relatively old-style" and told Stephen that getting removed from school was not a possible educational game plan. They told Stephen that failing to graduate from high school would most probably be like a lead weight around his feet that may hurt his educational attainment for the remainder of his life. Not only this, but Stephen's Mother and Father were very upset that he was drinking in the first place and drinking with his friends in the second.

It was evident that his parents were in total accord with Stephen's principal and told Stephen that he had better make up his mind to see Miss Pender, the school psychologist. After his dialogue with his Mom and Dad, Stephen in due course agreed to see Miss Pender the next school day. So Stephen phoned the school and scheduled an appointment to see Miss Pender the next morning before school.

When Stephen went to see Miss Pender, she instantly reviewed all of the alcohol-related issues Stephen had gotten into and asked him if he knew why his recent alcohol-related behavior was such a cause for concern.

Quite sincerely, Stephen was unsure why the principal suggested that he see a school therapist. As he stated to Miss Pender, why should he see a professional counselor about his drinking circumstances? Because virtually all of his friends drink the same amount that he does, in essence, drinking is no big issue. Stated differently, if nearly everyone is drinking, why is this such a big deal?

In a word, Stephen's involvement with teenage alcohol abuse was starting to thwart his ability to function as an accountable young man. As verbalized by Miss Pender, "Just because most of your buddies drink beer, wine, wine coolers, or hard liquor does not mean that it's right for you."

Luckily, Miss Pender was extremely well prepared for her scheduled time with Stephen. She showed him reports and research studies she had highlighted that outlined various drinking facts and statistics that targeted most people in general. Then she showed Stephen a lot of figures and reports that applied mainly to teens.

After Miss Pender went over the aforesaid teenage alcohol and teen alcohol abuse statistics and facts, it was clear that what Miss Pender taught Stephen was a wake up call for him. Why? Because for the first time in his young life, someone not only made the effort to explain the long term and the short term outcomes of alcoholism and alcohol abuse, but she also took the time to verify what she was saying with alcoholism and alcohol abuse facts and statistics that related to everyone, and mainly to underage drinkers.

In actual fact, it was almost as if a light went on and Stephen instantly comprehended why he should not be engaging in abusive and excessive drinking with or without his classmates any longer. Stephen thanked Miss Pender for her concern and for the material she presented and then accepted her reinstatement into class.
