Uterine Fibroid Treatments

Before getting to the uterine fibroid treatments you must know exactly what uterine fibroids are so that you can get the complete picture. Uterine fibroids are tumors that are formed in the uterus of a woman as the name also indicates. These tumors are benign and have something like a one-in-a-million chance that they become cancerous in nature. Also they do not lead to uterine cancer in any way. So it is safe to say that these tumors are pretty harmless in this regard and are not fatal under normal circumstances.

What causes the formation of these tumors is unknown. Uterine tumors are muscle mass and connective tissue growths that can form under the uterus lining, on the uterus walls or any other place in, on or near the uterus. Also these tumors vary in size and rate of growth. Due to these variable factors uterine fibroid treatments are always different in different cases.

Sometimes the size of the tumor is very small. In that case the tumor is monitored and the growth rate is kept under strict observation. Since the tumors start shrinking after menopause naturally, some women prefer not to get any treatment if the tumor is not causing harm in any way.

But in any case before starting on uterine fibroid treatments a complete checkup is required so that a customized treatment plan can be devised according to the condition and preference of the patient. The modern diagnosis tools like ultra sound, CT scan and MRI allow the doctors to get accurate information about the fibroids. Their position in the uterus, the size of the tumor, the growth rate, the weight, the type (single nodule or in clusters) all can be calculated by the use of the diagnostic tools. When all this information is at hand the patient is briefed about all the pros and cons and the doctors suggests the best possible solution.

To choose one of the uterine fibroid treatments or not to undergo treatment at all lies solely in the hands of the patient. Sometimes the tumor grows very large in size and the position is such that it weighs down on the pelvic floor. This can cause heavy bleeding during menstruation and bleeding any time during the whole month. This condition can be particularly painful and create a nuisance. Also the constant weight on the pelvic region can cause structural damage to the body of the woman. In this case the doctors would usually prefer surgery over any other uterine fibroid treatments.

Surgery for fibroids is minimally evasive. Mostly surgeries for fibroids use the laparoscopic technique. The lasers can considerably reduce the size of the fibroids. Sometimes even an incision is not required and the fibroid is removed through the vagina but that will mainly depend upon the size and location of the fibroid. Fibroids are also treated through fibroid embolization. In this technique a small tube is inserted in the uterine artery and small plastic balls are used to block the blood flow to these tumors. The tumors will then shrink due to lack of blood supply and nutrition.

Other than this there are several alternate uterine fibroid treatments. For example hormone treatment is available for fibroids. The hormonal changes in a woman's body can actually cause the tumors to shrink or increase in size. So through hormonal treatment the size of the tumor is kept in check and the tumor remains harmless until it starts diminishing during menopause.

Those who believe in eastern medication can also rely on acupuncture as one of the uterine fibroid treatments. Many women have reported a good result after getting acupuncture. But for that you have to find a trustworthy acupuncturist. It is advisable that you get any form of treatment you prefer before pregnancy.
